This very special first owner
Actually, this car would simply belong in our collections, i.e. those of the BMW M1. Especially as the photos are not very good. But sometimes we like to make an exception. There are two reasons for this: There aren’t really many grey BMW M1s, there were apparently four ex-works. This fine example also has what must be a unique interior. The colour combination of inside and outside is really worth seeing.
But even more important is the first owner: Jochen Neerpasch. He was not only the grandfather of BMW M GmbH, he was also the driving force behind the BMW M1. When Neerpasch left BMW in 1980, he made this unique M1 a gift to himself; #1218 was delivered on 27 July 1980. But then the otherwise so level-headed man made “one of the biggest mistakes of his life”: he soon sold the M1 again.
Since then, #1218 has had a varied life, most recently the M1 was exhibited in a private collection, which will now be auctioned by RM Sotheby’s in Munich on 26 November. There is no need for an estimated price, the Neerpasch M1 is “offered without reserve”. We are curious – and have other fine vehicles in our archive.
