Audi activesphere Concept

Scented candles or: When is April 1st?

It’s been a few moons since BMW presented a pick-up based on an M3. Well, it was an April 1 joke, back in 2011, when the automotive industry also had a bit of a sense of humour. On the other hand, M GmbH actually built the thing, it even has road approval – as a truck.

While we don’t know the unladen weight of the Audi activesphere Concept, every single wheel gives the impression of weighing something like a Fiat 500. It must also have a powerful battery, because the study wants to have a range of 600 kilometres; we are certainly close to the weight limit of 3.5 tonnes. But it’s nice to see that Ingolstadt also seems to have a sense of humour. How else would they come up with the idea of naming the four future studies like scented candles in an esoteric groove?

With the Audi activesphere Concept, however, they are going out on a limb – we can’t see the point of this study, because the market chances can be described as “below zero”. Nobody wants to drive into the desert with two bicycles in search of a fast charger. We assume that the Audi activesphere Concept should have represented the technology transfer from the 2023 Dakar winner to soon to be expected series products, also visually. Nothing came of the Dakar victory, on the contrary, it was an absolute debacle. And so the study now stands like an erratic block in the desert or in the snow, completely incoherent. Perhaps Audi would have been better off waiting until 1 April, BMW had a great PR success with its pick-up back then.

We have more sensible vehicles in our archives.
