Alfa Romeo 1750/2000 Berlina

The classic

Just so you know: radical is looking for a Berlina like this. We’d prefer a 1750 to a 2000, but it doesn’t really matter. Not for a story, but for a purchase. It would be in very good hands, we promise.

In 1958, Alfa Romeo had introduced the 2000 as the successor to the Millenove. There was the well-known Spider (102.04), the somewhat less famous Sprint (102.05) and also a saloon, Berlina (102.00), which is hardly remembered today. In 1961, there were six cylinders and 2.6 litres of displacement, again a Spider (106.01), again a Sprint (106.02, surprisingly the best-selling variant) – and again a Berlina (106.00). Visually, there were hardly any differences between these two four-door models, but in the mid-1960s, the Berlina already looked quite outdated and was difficult to sell. On the other hand, the time of large sedans in Italy seemed to be over at the time – and so Alfa Romeo itself went back a bit with its successor, the Alfa Romeo 1750 Berlina, which was presented in 1967 and introduced in 1968. With a length of 4.39 metres, it was significantly smaller than the 2600, which measured 4.7 metres. And as the designation suggests, the engine was also scaled back, with only four cylinders and a displacement of 1.8 litres – the designation 1750 was chosen as a reference to the magnificent 6C 1750.

The new model was based on the Giulia, but had a six centimetre longer wheelbase. The design was by Bertone and was, of course, reminiscent of the Giulia, but with its smooth surfaces it looked pleasingly modern. The 113 hp were enough for the Alfa, which weighs just over 1100 kilograms, to achieve very decent driving performance, and the rear-wheel-drive chassis was also superior to its competitors. From 1971, there was then the two-litre with 132 hp, which was then capable of speeds of up to 190 km/h. More than 100,000 units of the 1750 Belina were sold, and the two-litre version reached almost 50,000 units in just two years of production – a great success for Alfa Romeo, the earlier 2000/2600 sedans had only reached a little over 2000 units.

Alfa Romeos are well represented in our archive.
