The STI Impreza was never really slow. But in 2010, the Japanese really took it to the extreme with the third generation (GR, 2007-2011) in a collaboration with Cosworth. Although only 75 were produced exclusively for England, the Subaru Impreza Cosworth STi CS400 is a really nasty piece of kit with its 400 hp. It has the classic 2.5-litre boxer engine, but one that has been heavily modified by Cosworth. Lighter pistons are suspended from forged high-performance conrods, a more powerful oil pump provides better lubrication, stronger bearings ensure speed stability, and all this is secured by stronger cylinder block bolts and high-strength head gaskets. Added to this are a larger turbocharger and a more powerful exhaust system. Thanks to a newly tuned engine control unit, the boxer’s power output increased from 280 to 400 hp – and the maximum torque from 407 to 542 Nm.

The all-wheel drive and the final drive ratio remained unchanged, but the transmission and clutch were reinforced to handle the additional power properly. The result was impressive: the Cosworth Impreza accelerated from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.7 seconds, with an electronically limited top speed of 250 km/h. The Subaru Impreza Cosworth STi CS400’s chassis was also modified, with the chassis lowered by 15 millimetres. In addition, it was fitted with 18-inch alloy wheels with 245/40 tyres, which increased the track width by 12 millimetres. The front brake discs were also enlarged, with the AP Racing components measuring 355 millimetres in diameter and working with six-piston brake calipers.

Xenon headlights, grilles on the front air intakes, a new front spoiler and a new spoiler on the rear lid, along with numerous Cosworth logos, provided the appropriate look. The interior was upgraded with Cosworth logos, leather sports seats and piano-black trim. There were only three colours: silver, grey and red. From the factory (all Subaru warranties remained in place), the Subaru Impreza Cosworth STi CS400 cost the equivalent of around 60,000 francs – a gift for a projectile like this. It’s safe to assume that the few ‘used cars’ are more expensive today.
