Climate change?
It’s nice to see another Lancia Stratos come up for auction. This car with chassis number 829AR0 001666 will be on offer at RM Sotheby’s in St. Moritz on 9 September 2022 – and we are very excited to see the hammer price. It can be assumed – in general – that Stratos will soar to new heights, although not necessarily this specimen.
There is a reason for this: one may be pleased to learn that it too, is evidence – perhaps, hopefully – of a “climate change” at least at RM Sotheby’s. The description explains that this Stratos, delivered to its first owner in Padua on 22 May 1975, was totalled in 1976 after the owner was braked by a tree during what must have been a brisk drive. The car, it is said, was then rebuilt by a local Lancia dealer, but on a new, unnumbered chassis. When the Stratos was re-registered for road use on 14 January 1977, it then bore a peculiar number, 51921/76.
In the following years, this car passed through quite a few hands, Italy, Monaco, Germany, then from 2008 it was in Switzerland. And was last auctioned in 2018 – amazingly again with its original chassis number 829AR0 001666. That’s a bit amazing – and at the same time it’s pleasing that RM Sotheby’s is revealing these facts. This is new – and that is a good thing. Even if it is probably not very helpful in the sale.
We have the whole story of the Stratos, our own experiences with it and a nice collection: here.
