The small print

Bonhams Auction in Gstaad

On 3 July 2022, Bonhams will auction a Lamborghini Espada Series II in Gstaad, but it is certainly worth reading the small print. Because the good piece could be considerably more expensive than you think.

Well, we can’t really tell much about the condition of the 70 Espada with chassis number #8400, we haven’t seen it (yet). But according to the description of Bonhams, the car seems to be quite ok. Of course, the descriptions of the auctioneer are basically rather positive, you have to read between the lines – which applies to “re-commissioning before further use”.

We are of the opinion that the Espada is underestimated. Although very good specimens now cost around 150,000 francs. #8400 is now listed with an estimated price of 50’000 to 80’000 francs, which could be called a bargain. But there is the small print of this auction by Bonhams in Gstaad.

Let’s assume a hammer price of 50,000 francs for a Swiss buyer. Add to this the premium of 15 per cent, plus VAT of 7.7 per cent on this total price, and that makes, rounded up: 62,000 francs. But because the car has not yet been cleared through customs, we have to add another 12.5 per cent, which brings us to almost 70,000 francs. Add value-added tax to this amount, and you end up with 75,000 francs. Compared to the hammer price, that’s a premium of almost exactly 50 per cent. The bargain is then no longer a bargain. But it’s still an Espada – and they’re just great.
