Porsche 959 «Speedster»

Handcrafted

Once upon a time, there was a Porsche 959 “Komfort” with chassis number WP0ZZZ95ZHS900142, which was registered on 23 November 1987 to Jürgen Lässig, who had finished second in the 24 Hours of Le Mans that same year (and won at Daytona in 1995). He clocked up a few thousand kilometres in the Porsche, but then abandoned it on a German motorway in 1988. The wreck was bought by Karl-Heinz ‘Charlie’ Feustel. Well, we don’t want to delve any further into ‘Charlie’s’ past here, but in any case, he came up with a plan to remove the wrecked 959 from his roof. Together with two employees, he invested 4,000 hours of work in the ‘Speedster,’ which became a masterpiece of craftsmanship. With a soft top and hard top.

The vehicle was exhibited at the Auto Becker stand at the IAA in 1989, then also at the Essen Motor Show. And Feustel had an asking price in mind – north of 2 million German marks. In 1990, the Speedster was actually sold to a Dr Klaus Berg from Karben. The open-top 959 has been with the same owner since 2008 and has not been driven much. RM Sotheby’s is now looking for a new owner at the auction in Milan in 2025, with an expected price of 1.1 to 1.5 million euros.

There is much more to discover about the Porsche 959 here. And there is always the archive.
