Undaunted
You have to hand it to Mazda: Undaunted, the Japanese continue to pursue their own unique line. Only recently they breathed new life into the Wankel engine, and now they are launching the Mazda CX-90, a powerful SUV that can seat up to eight people – and “still” arouse emotions. This is not only due to the restrained yet successful design, but also to the powertrains.
On the one hand, the most powerful version of the new in-line six-cylinder engine with 3.3 litres of displacement works under the bonnet. With gentle electrification, it comes to 345 hp and 500 Nm of maximum torque, making the CX-90 the most powerful Mazda ever. It is a pleasure to see that the Japanese continue to perpetuate the fine art of classic engine building, against all trends. On the other hand, they also offer a plug-in hybrid version, 2.5-litre four-cylinder with e-motor and a system output of 327 hp. The purely electric range is said to be 63 kilometres thanks to a 17.8-kWh battery; we know that the Japanese are rather conservative in their calculations. Shifting is done via an 8-speed automatic, and all-wheel drive is a given for hybrids.
In the interior, too, the Japanese cultivate a high level of craftsmanship, in keeping with their country’s tradition. There will be stitching that follows an ancient pattern; the finest materials go without saying. Of course, there are also the ubiquitous screens, but the most important controls are still analogue, i.e.: switches and buttons. Unfortunately, it is not yet known when and at what price the Mazda CX-90 will come to Europe, but one can look forward to this competitor to the typical German premium products. Especially as the SUV also gets the “Kinematic Posture Control” from the MX-5 roadster; this is supposed to prevent body roll. Which is a good thing.
