Probably every one of the 108 Porsche 904s built, also known as Carrera GTS, has its own special history – as is usual with racing cars. But that is precisely what often makes the history of each 904 difficult: accidents, new engines, gearbox damage, conversions – most of these Porsches have experienced a lot. And of course not everything is well documented. Or has been ‘embellished’ over the years. Which at the same time opened the floodgates to fantasies: unfortunately, what is written on the Porsche 904 is often not what is inside. Or as Jay Leno once said so beautifully: ‘This is one of 54 Bentley Blowers, of which only 135 still exist’. What we want to express is that it is not that easy to find a really good, clean Carrera GTS.

This particular example, chassis number 904-028, was delivered to the well-known racing driver Gerhard Koch on 27 February 1964 via the Porsche dealer in Düsseldorf. Koch achieved some very good results with his Porsche, winning the Rhineland-Palatinate Trophy and taking class victory at the Angola Grand Prix. At the end of the season, he sold 904-028 to Rainer Ising, who, together with Bernd Degner, managed to win their class at the famous Marathon de la Route. After the factory, the Porsche then came to Uwe Bühl in the USA, who then installed a 901/05 six-cylinder engine in the vehicle and probably sold the car to Alexander Pollack in 1972. 904-028 remained there for 52 years, with some minor and major repairs; nothing is known about the last few years.

What are we trying to say? Nothing, the car is for sale at Gooding & Co. at Amelia Island 2025, with an estimated price of 1.5 to 1.8 million dollars. The full story of the Porsche 904 is available here. There is also the archive.
