35 Million?
Officially, the record price paid for a McLaren F1 stands at just over 25 million dollars, for #014 at the end of 2025; in private sales, the figure is likely to have been even higher. It is also said that Gordon Murray usually has a say in the matter; he wants the 106 examples of his masterpiece to be in good hands. Whether this is actually the case is known only to a very few insiders – or perhaps not even to them, as the previous owner of the F1 featured here, #10R, is Nick Mason, Pink Floyd’s drummer and one of the true legends amongst collectors of classic cars: Ferrari 250 GTO, Bugatti Type 35, Jaguar D-Type. And #10R is simply one of the most extraordinary examples of the F1. But: ‘Value in excess of $35,000,000 USD’?
Of course, there’s that extraordinary paintwork, which it’s had since leaving the factory. There’s also the Lanzante conversion from a racing car to ‘street legal’. And yes, it’s a ’96 GTR, of which only nine were ever made – and, alongside the 1995 Le Mans winner, #01R, the only short-tail GTR. But: it never competed in a single race; in 1996, it was only used in practice for the 24 Hours of Le Mans. What’s more, #10R has had to be completely restored twice: a journalist once crashed it into the countryside, and Nick Mason himself drove it into a tyre barrier at Goodwood in 2017. 35 million dollars – that’s quite a figure.
